The cinema owes its origins to the invention of the kinetoscope by Thomas Edison during the late 19th century, from those humble beginnings grew the American cinemas, the first being opened in Los Angeles in 1903. Since then moving pictures or movies as they were later called have evolved from the silent in black and white to digital colour films accompanied by dialogue, music and sound effects.
This section presents a dictionary of more than 2500 movies through the ages, from the classic to the cult, from the banal to the bizarre.
Each entry includes details of the film's genre - western, comedy, horror, drama, romance and so on - and a synopsis of the story, who starred in the film, who directed the film and when the film was made.
